The Velvet Casino

Five tables under one roof, five different sets of odds — knowing them is the whole edge you get

The Velvet Casino is a dedicated city building with five gambling tables, each running a distinct game with its own odds. Bets are placed from a shared set of stakes — ¤10, ¤50, ¤100, ¤500, ¤1,000, or everything you're carrying at once — and every wager and every win across all five tables is tracked toward the same pair of lifetime achievements.

The five tables

TableHow it pays
BlackjackA standard hand of cards against the dealer.
SlotsThree reels. Match three: 🍒 ×2 · 🔔 ×4 · ⭐ ×8 · 💎 ×20 · 7️⃣ ×60. Any two matching pays a flat ×1.2.
DiceTwo six-sided dice. Under 7 or Over 7 both pay ×2; Exactly 7 pays ×5.
RouletteA 37-pocket wheel (0 through 36). Red or Black pays ×2, Green (the 0) pays ×15, an exact number pays ×35.
Double or NothingA single coin flip, true 50/50 — win and your stake doubles, lose and it's gone.

Reading the odds

The five tables aren't built to the same house edge, and it shows if you actually work the numbers out. Dice is the most evenly built of the five: Under 7 and Over 7 both have a 15-in-36 chance and pay double, and Exactly 7 has a 6-in-36 chance (1 in 6) and pays quintuple — all three bets carry the same edge as each other, just at different volatility. Roulette is the opposite story: a Red or Black bet (18 of 37 pockets, paying double) is close to a standard even-money casino bet, but the Green bet is a real trap by comparison — a 1-in-37 chance paying only ×15 works out to keeping barely 40% of what you'd expect to keep on average, dramatically worse odds than either the Red/Black bet or the exact-number bet (1-in-37 paying ×35, much closer to fair) sitting right next to it on the same wheel.

What gets tracked

Every bet placed at any of the five tables adds to a single lifetime wagered total, and the single largest profit from any one bet is remembered as your biggest win — both feed a pair of four-tier achievements (lifetime wagered up to ¤1,000,000; biggest single win up to ¤50,000).

Not the only bet in town: the Whale Trap

A second, entirely separate gambling spot exists at the Whale Trap, a hostile mining landmark guarded by Card Sharps, a Pit Boss, and a boss creature literally named The House — nothing to do with the Velvet Casino building itself, beyond sharing the theme. Standing near its own door and pressing [E] opens a single fixed-stakes bet — ¤50, ¤200, ¤1,000 or ¤5,000 — with a flat 48% chance to win, double or nothing, no cards or wheel involved. That's worse odds than the Velvet Casino's own Double or Nothing table, which is a true 50/50 — a small, consistent edge in the house's favour, fitting for a place run by a creature called The House. A win also carries a small independent chance (1 in 20) of an extra Jackpot Token.

Version history

  • Fixed the casino being completely unable to open. Three separate bugs had left the Velvet Casino broken since it was built: the betting screen itself could never actually open, its own Leave button would have thrown an error the first time anyone managed to press it, and — worst of all — that same broken button would have silently broken the world map's own close button too, the first time either was ever triggered. All three were fixed together.

Trivia

  • The Double or Nothing table's own betting screen is internally titled "Lucky Void Casino" rather than "Velvet Casino" — the only one of the five tables with a different name on its own panel than the building it actually sits in.
  • Roulette's exact-number bet is the single riskiest wager in the casino at 36-to-1 against — far longer odds than the Dice table's Exactly 7 bet (5-to-1 against), despite paying only about seven times as much when it does land.
