The Windward Mooring
You made the climb, killed the boss, and came home with pockets full of nothing — until this
A structure raised beside the landing pad on each of The Floating Islands — a mast, a capstan, guy lines and a cargo net — built specifically to close a promise the islands had never kept. Between them the five islands declare twenty unique materials, every one dropped in quantity by the local mobs and bosses, and an audit of the entire game found that not one of the twenty was an input to any recipe, station, quest, or trade anywhere — only Cloud Silk even had its own sell price. The islands were a loot machine whose loot had nowhere to go.
Raising one
Costs 6 Planks and 3 Iron Bars — deliberately materials that don't exist anywhere on the islands themselves, sawn and smelted on the ground, so the flight up has to be loaded just like the flight down. One mooring per island, permanent for that character once raised.
Spinning the capstan
With a mooring raised, spinning its capstan consumes that island's own four unique materials — including the one dropped only by its boss, which finally gives that boss a reason to matter beyond its own drop table — and bales them into a Skyward Bale.
| Island | Materials consumed per bale |
|---|---|
| Skyreach Meadows | 4 Cloud Silk, 4 Thermal Down, 3 Skyforged Iron, 2 Zephyr Gem |
| Ashfall Spire | 4 Ember Ash, 4 Cinderglass, 3 Magma Bead, 2 Phoenix Plume |
| Frostwind Shelf | 4 Rime Crystal, 4 Windstone, 3 Glacier Pelt, 2 Aurora Core |
| The Void Reef | 4 Star Coral, 4 Void Pearl, 3 Gravity Shard, 2 Eclipse Ore |
| The Cloud Garden | 4 Petal Gold, 4 Fae Dust, 3 Nectar Amber, 2 Heartbloom |
The bale is worthless in the sky, on purpose
A Skyward Bale simply won't open at altitude — it has to be carried down to open at all. Once opened on the ground, it splits into Iron Bars, Gold Bars, and cash: exactly the currency the rest of the game already runs on, and precisely what the Hollow Forge keeps asking players to carry up to the Moon in the first place. Sky loot now feeds the Earth economy, and through it, the lunar one.
Moor all five and every capstan pays double
Once every one of the five islands has its own mooring raised, every capstan anywhere starts paying two bales per spin instead of one — a direct incentive to visit the islands a player might otherwise be tempted to ignore in favour of just farming their one favourite.
Version history
- The Windward Mooring added, directly following an audit that found the islands' entire material set — twenty unique drops across five islands — had nowhere to go anywhere in the game. Deliberately built as a two-way trip in the same shape as the Hollow Forge: materials that only exist on the ground are required to raise it, so climbing to an island isn't only ever about what comes back down.
Trivia
- A Skyward Bale is deliberately typed as a tool item rather than a plain material — the same reason the Moon's own Downlink Beacon is — since only weapon, tool, and vehicle items get an "equip" held-in-hand button in the inventory, which is what lets [E] actually open the bale once it's the item being held.
- Each mooring's cargo net and pennant are tinted in that specific island's own accent colour, so a moored island can be picked out from the others at flight altitude before ever landing on it.
