The Ashfall Kiln
It waits in orbit, not on your body — the payoff lands in a system you already paid for
Vulcanis is the emptiest of the three worlds a player can actually stand on — three vein kinds, an endless spawn of Magma-born, and a rocket home. Everything dug there had to ride home in a player's own pockets, on a planet that spawns creatures specifically built to take it off them. The Ashfall Kiln is the one fixed landmark on the planet, and it exists to fix exactly that problem.
Firing a lens
Interact with the Kiln to fire it: 6 Ember Glass and 2 Magma Core bank into an Ashglass Lens. Before this system existed, Ember Glass had exactly one recipe in the entire game asking for it — this gave it a second, genuinely useful one. Up to three lenses can be seated into the Kiln's cradle, permanently, one at a time; each one is visible from outside as a lit pane, so the Kiln's own state can be read at a glance without needing to interact with it first.
Shipping ore in orbit instead of in your pockets
With at least one lens seated, the Kiln can throw a consignment off-planet: any Vulcanis ore currently carried goes up the plume and waits in orbit rather than staying on the player's body — no longer at risk from anything on the ground. Capacity scales directly with lenses seated, at 40 units per lens (up to 120 with all three seated). The consignment doesn't need a separate trip to collect — it rides down inside the same Downlink Beacon supply pod the Moon Base's Lunar Relay already delivers to Earth, landing the payoff in a system the character has already built and paid for rather than creating a fourth, isolated delivery chain of its own.
If the Kiln's hold is already full, it simply says so — call the pod down on Earth to empty it, or seat another lens to raise the cap.
One press, several jobs
Interacting with the Kiln always does the single most useful thing available, in order: seat a carried lens if there's room and one's in hand; otherwise fire a new lens if the cradle isn't full yet; otherwise ship any carried ore if the cradle is live and has room; and if none of that applies, fire a lens anyway — even with a full cradle, a lens is still worth carrying home, since it's one of the only things on Vulcanis a merchant will pay properly for.
Version history
- The Ashfall Kiln added, giving Vulcanis its one fixed landmark and Ember Glass its first real second use. Deliberately reuses the Moon's own supply-pod delivery chain rather than building a separate one, so the payoff for descending onto a third world lands somewhere the player's effort on the second world already paid to build.
Trivia
- This is one of a small family of similarly-shaped "cast, seat, then draw" stations the game has built repeatedly across several different locations — the same underlying pattern also produces The Pauper's Pyre in the graveyard, The Meltwater Still on the Cheese Rock, and The Cindergate at the floor of Hell, each one solving a materials dead-end local to wherever it stands.
- A character saved before this system existed simply loads with a cold, unfired Kiln standing on Vulcanis and loses nothing at all.
